Royce Kinsey, rally commissioner 2019-2020
The Initial letter
Reflecting on last year, I was less prepared and was falling behind during the second semester due to stress from taking Math III and not being in charge of any events during the semester. Now that have rested during the summer and went to core camp for the second year, I now have a refresher on how to perfectly run the rallies. Last year, I got a comment saying that the only thing good about the rallies were my campaign speeches. Now looking back, I am now ready to take on senior year.
The first rally I have to emcee is the Black Light Rally. I have very high expectations for this one as it was very successful last year with the student body and I’m working closely with Natalie and Laila to make sure it is perfect. I’m not sure if it’ll live up to the hype like it did last year since no one really knew about the fireworks but I’m sure it’ll be great for the freshman and new students who have just came to Ripon High. I might not get a lot of comments as I am not able to make it to the game that week as I have work but I hope the team wins and hopefully the rally will help them win like they did last year. Natalie has amazing planning skills so I have great confidence this will be a success..
The month of September and October are going to be busy ones as we are transitioning into homecoming season and this means that I have to work on the Night Rally with Laila. I believe that we can get a very good outcome if we can get a lot of people to come like it was last year. It was the first night rally we ever did and it was very successful and I’m excited to see if we can exceed expectations this year. I am really looking forward to this year and It is my last so I want to leave Ripon High School with a legacy that no one will ever forget because the underclassmen know it wouldn’t be the same without the ROYCIE D!!!

Favorite quotes - Page 2
One quote that I like that involves Leadership is, “Leadership is not a popularity contest; it's about leaving your ego at the door. The name of the game is to lead without a title.” by Robin S. Sharma. One misconception about leadership is that people think leadership is all popular kids. The truth is that it’s really not. There are people who were chosen to be in leadership because they are proven to be leaders by their grades, academics, and other talents. This is my second year being elected into leadership and the first time, I got on because I ran uncontested. The second time, I ran against a couple people and I won because, my speech brought all the kids off their phones and they wanted to see my speech, but I don’t see myself as popular. Leaders should leave the mentality of being popular behind and lead the way. “Another quote that I like is Be a yardstick of quality, Some people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected.” by Steve Jobs. This quote shows that you don’t have the most perfect person to get the job done. You can be the least smartest person and have a good track record. I’m the type of person who isn’t perfect as everyone else but I get praise for everything. I run cross country and I’m not the fastest but everyone still praises me for being a positive character. One last quote I like is “Leadership is about vision and responsibility, not power.” When people are running for an elected position, they think that they will gain all of the power they can get a hold of. The truth is they cannot, there are limits to what you can do in Leadership and that’s why we have the branches. If you are going to be a part of the Leadership program, you have to hold yourself responsible for your actions, even if you do something that can jeopardize your privilege of being in the program. You also have to have a strong vision, if you don’t have a strong vision, you will end up failing.

“Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.” by John Quincy Adams has been a quote that has stuck with me this school year. I had to break down my time management with 5 class periods, a part-time job at McDonalds’, and running cross country. Doing all three things all in one fitting was stressful but once I got it all done, all of the stress and pain went away. If I gave up, it would’ve been hard to get back to the task. If I figured it out, I was satisfied.
In Leadership this year, there were many problems especially with the Holiday Night Rally where communication was not clear and there were too many mishaps. But Laila and I kept going. I wanted to give up so badly. I was angry at everyone in leadership because they wouldn’t cooperate with me. In the end, everybody liked the rally and the band’s performance afterwards was a good way to promote the rally.
Senioritis has been hitting me hard recently and I don’t want it to be over yet as there’s a lot I wanna do with the little time I have with people I’ve known since I was in elementary school. There’s still a lot of things to do before the end of the school year. There’s one thing for sure and it’s that never giving up is always the key to every situation.

Goals - Page 4
One goal I have for this school year is to achieve a GPA above 3.5. Last year was rough for me because of Math and Chemistry. Now that I only have four classes plus a TA period, I can only focus on those four without being stressed out about every assignment. Another goal I have for this school year is to achieve an award for something whether it’s the homecoming/winterfest court or a senior superlative. I feel as if I put a lot of work into what I do that it goes unnoticed, I know there’s a lot of people that look up to me so I know I can achieve something by next May. A short term goal I have is to make enough money from work to buy myself a new phone. I got the phone I currently have right now when it was the newest phone on the market. Now, the charger port and silent button are messed up. It should take me about 4-5 more paychecks to meet the goal. Another short term goal I have is to receive a scholarship. As of right now, I have been looking at colleges and seeing what they offer but I don’t want to pay a lot of money for school. I’m looking at all kinds of scholarship opportunities that will help me get into a school I would eventually apply to. A long term goal I have is to buy myself a new car. The car I have right now was my grandfather’s but it is now mine. The car doesn’t have good AC and it goes very slow. I’m hoping to buy the same model but in a more recent build. Another long term goal I have is to lose weight. I have been doing cross country with hopes to lose weight and I plan to do Track to keep me in shape. It’s a lot of work to lose weight so hopefully by next year, I will be skinnier.
Goals - Page 5
The first goal I set out was to maintain a 3.5 or higher GPA. This year I achieved a 3.6 GPA which is the highest GPA I have ever achieved in a long time. It wasn’t easy as there were many roadblocks in the way but I overcame every obstacle. The second goal I put out was to achieve an award and I was voted by my class as “Most Likely to Become a Famous Rapper”. This of course I saw coming as everybody in the school knows I rap. It’s something I really didn’t want people to know about until somebody told the whole program I did. When I meet somebody, the person introducing me to them tells them I’m a soundcloud rapper. I don’t want everyone to know that (yet). It’s not time for my “career” to launch yet.
The first short term goal was to make enough money to afford a new phone. I did get a new phone back in December. I got the iPhone 11 which is the newest model. To this date, I have made $2,000+ working at McDonalds. However, I only have $250-300 in my account most of the time so I can’t afford a new phone but made enough in total to own one. The second short term goal was to receive a scholarship. I have received a Cal Grant. They looked at my transcript and they’re giving me over a thousand dollars. I am currently applying for local scholarship. So many that I’m bound to get one hopefully.
The first long term goal was to buy a new car. I have not reached this goal yet but hopefully by the time I’m out of university, I’ll be getting myself a sweet new ride. Hoping I can get a Tesla but I’m not going to get one working three hour shifts. The last goal was to lose weight. After finishing cross country and being in track, people have started to notice that I have gotten slimmer. It shows that I am improving in terms of health. I’m starting prioritize health over unhealthy foods/drinks but that’s going to take a lot of time. Hopefully I’ll be able to before summer starts.

Royce Kinsey, 18 years old from Ripon, California has a lot on his hands. First, he is the rally commissioner for Ripon High, He is a runner for cross country, He works at McDonald’s making bread, and at night, he is a rapper. As a rally commissioner, Royce has to MC and write scripts for every rally with his partner. “It’s a pretty fun position once you start planning and then it gets very stressful but when the day comes, boy is it fun?” This is his second year holding this position for Leadership. “I am using this year to reflect on last year’s mistakes and making the rallies better while training Laila.” So far in this school year, he has done three rallies. “Once you get the hang of talking in front of 1000+ people, It gets very entertaining!”
This year, Royce has started cross country. “I started cross country because I wanted to get in shape as I have a dad body as of right now” Since the summer practices started, he started to feel a little depressed. “I didn’t like waking up in the morning to go run, It was painful but good thing Zaahir was with me and went to McDonalds with me after practice.” The first practice, he walked the entire way and got lost. “It was not fun, at all.” As time passed, Royce has become even better and has improved his time by two minutes. “It’s a very difficult sport, but it really pays off and it’s a great way to meet new people.”
For about two years, Royce has been on a job search for a very long time. “It was crucial, I needed a job to get my own gas and buy my own things.” He has had interviews with many companies such as Hollister, Pizza Hut, and Jack in the Box, but got declined. One day at practice, he gets a call from McDonalds’ asking if he wanted an interview and he did not back down. “It was such an amazing feeling! I’ve been trying to get with them for a while!” The interview day came and Royce was very prepared. “The interview process was short and easy! I also got a free drink out of it!” Two days later, he would get a phone call that would change everything. “The manager called and offered me the job, I was happy as can be and my mom was so happy she started to cry.” Since then, he’s been on the grind and making that cash.
Whenever Royce isn’t doing anything, he would hop on YouTube and find beats to rap/sing over. In April 2018, Royce came across a beat made by Midlow Beats titled “Shopping Spree.” “The first words that came to my mouth were, girl whatcha tryna do with me, I’m tryna go on a shopping spree. After that, I wrote all of that down.” A majority of the song is also a freestyle. “I freestyled a good amount of the song, I recorded and wrote the song back in April 2018, but when I was revising the song in November of that year, I needed to think of something to replace the mumbles in the song.” He eventually came up with a verse that shouts out late rapper XXXTENTACION who was shot and killed in Deerfield Beach, Florida at a Motorcycle Dealership at age 20. “It broke me, he was trying to make a positive change in his life and he got killed before he could do it, he also had a son who was on the way and thinking about the fact that he would never meet his father is heartbreaking.”
Shopping Spree originally dropped on December 21st 2018 at his friend’s birthday party as a gift. Soon after, he realized it wasn’t ready so he deleted it four hours later. Then, he made a promise that he would drop it if elected rally commissioner in which he did. He dropped the song on February 14th, 2019. Since then, it has become popular with his friends and people he has met. “Once I played that song for the first time, I knew it was going to go somewhere.” No matter what Royce does next, we will always know that he will remain the same.

Admiration
One person that I admire is my mom. My mom and I have been through it all with each other. Whether it was through the rough times and the family vacations, we had to deal with a lot. We had our fights and our mishaps but we both forgive and forget. We had a lot of good times too. Sometimes I have a lot more to appreciate about my mom.
My mom works at J&M Equipment which is across the street from Target. She works for about 7 hours and then comes home at around 5:30. She even works on weekends and holidays sometimes so she can provide for Rylie and I when we are not working ourselves. This shows that my mom really cares by working hard and dealing with angry customers to help Rylie and I succeed.
There were times where she wasn’t able to work and times she couldn’t get things together and thought it would get worse as time progressed. However, Rylie, Mike, and myself have all stuck by her side and helped her. A couple years ago, she had to fight a custody battle with my dad because of a lot of situations. In the end, she got custody of me and Rylie.
My mom goes through alot and sometimes I’m so focused on myself that I don’t even realize it. I tell my mom that my life is hard sometimes but she tells me that people treat her the same way over the phone. She has taught me how to love, how to stay strong through the hardest times, and to persevere. That is why I love my mother.

Inner animal
If I had to choose my inner animal, it would probably be a wolf. Wolves are very brave and they have the courage to roam around and have the freedom to do so. They are very powerful against their enemies and strengthens a unity with it’s pack. They are also leaders in some way as the lead their pack and are also very intelligent.
Like a wolf, I have the courage to go out during the rallies and start blasting my songs in front of approx 1000 students who look at me as an icon. I have the strength to unite the leadership class in planning the rallies and take power when I am going over the script. I am a leader in the class as I am leading the way for future students who come in the program. When I plan the rallies, I have the intelligence when it comes to planning an idea that I know for a fact the student body would really like.
Wolves are leaders like everyone in the leadership program. When it comes to myself, I’m more like wolf when it comes to my insight and knowing what the student body would like. I’ve started planning for the Holiday Night Rally this year since late October so hopefully my plan falls through and the student body will love it. But only time will tell because, like a wolf, I need to unite the student body like they’re my pack.

What I like about being a member in leadership
The first memory that comes to mind when coming up with Leadership memories is going to core camp this year. I got to meet the freshman and some of the new people that were in the program. The job sessions were always a good time as I was singing Shopping Spree and the camp conseulor liked it. I was having some mental setbacks but in the end, I had a really good time. I even sang Shopping Spree in front of everyone at the rally and everyone loved it.
My second favorite memory was the Back to School Dance. Although the underclassmen were trying to ruin it for us, We still had a really good time. I spent some of it outside because I needed to get some air in and I needed to clean up ahead of time so we could leave earlier. Nonetheless, it was a great way to end all of the four years going to the back to school dance. Some people shouldn’t be allowed to come to the dance in the future though because of the water bottle throwing.
My last favorite memory was the Homecoming Night Rally. Last year, I didn’t feel as if it lived up to the hype but this year, there was a lot of hype and there were I believe to be more people who participated than last year. We even had a really good lip sync of our own and everybody loved it. It was a really good time this year. It was a great way to start my last homecoming.

Reflection of a peer in leadership

Someone in Leadership who I really admire is no other than the ASB President herself, Carmen Simon. We have been friends since we were both student body presidents at our schools. When we got into Leadership together as Rally Commissioners, we were so excited. She has always helped me with some mental breakdowns I have had and with some leadership work in the past. We have been through many downfalls together as Rally Commissioners, but we always figured it out. During last school year, she told me she wanted to run for ASB President. I thought she was insane because it was her first year in Leadership and she’s going up against Natalie whose been in the program since freshman year. When elections came and went, Carmen got elected ASB President. I was happy and excited to see what she was going to do for the school. I’m very impressed with all of the effort she has been putting into this program for the past year. I’m glad to have a friend like Carmen, a real queen.

What i like to do
One thing I like to do in my spare time is listening to music. The main genres I like to listen to would be rap, r&b, and sometimes 90s-2000s hits. A few of my favorite artists would include XXXTENTACION, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Tjay, Playboi Carti, and Rod Wave. These are artists I mostly listen to while doing my work, or whenever I am just chilling at the house. Whenever I am in the mood, I will put on songs from a few years ago and start lip syncing in the mirror like I would in the car. Everytime I listen to The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars, it brings me back to when I was ten years old. I would say that music is my therapist. Whenever I’m sad, I just put on Marvin’s Room by Drake and just let my emotions fall through. Since I was young, I’ve always thought of music as this amazing invention that could let me express myself. I’m out here making my own song lyrics now and just listening to some of my favorite songs and some new ones I find on the Apple Music radio inspire me to make more.

Letter to parents
Dear Mom and Mike,
Thank you for helping me through the troubling times and giving me advice through my life as it gets more stressful. I know I can be a pain sometimes when I’m recording music in my room at 1 AM or getting angry because I had a bad day at work. When I come back from work angry, you guys would tell me about your experiences and it would make me feel a lot better. Even when I am in the worst mood, I know I’m not the only one. The advice keeps me going and tells me to not give up.
You guys have helped Rylie and I both get jobs by telling us what to and what not to do at a job interview or what to put in a job application. You both helped us become strong individuals by maintaining a stable environment for the both of us. Before we live here full time, it was complete chaos switching between houses and dealing with you know who. Since moving in, we’ve maintained our grades and I got into leadership and began to put myself out there.
I just want to thank you all for all that you both do. I may not say it a lot but I really do appreciate it. Even when you guys are upset with the decisions I want to make, I know you both still love me the same. Sometimes it’s hard for me to see what you guys both do but now that I work, I can see life in your guy’s shoes. Thank you both for everything.
Love,
Royce

The Letter
Dear Gianna,
I’ve seen you grow in the past year from being one of the candidates for rally commissioner up against me to being my replacement for next year. I cannot explain how proud I am of you. You learned from your failures and you bounced back and I can’t do anything but applaud that. However, there are a lot of things you got to keep in mind as you are transitioning into being a rally commissioner for the “World’s Greatest High School”. It may sound easy to be a rally commissioner but there are many situations that seem difficult so I want to show you what to do.
When I got into Leadership my junior year as a rally commissioner, I had basically no idea what was doing since I wasn’t in leadership previously. Since you were the junior class publicity officer, you have some insight on what to do. Natalie was a very helpful resource when we planned the Black Light Rally. It was the first rally I talked at and it will be the first for you too. The athletic commissioners and Laila will help you write the script since it’s your first time holding a rally.
Make sure you communicate clearly with your partner and those who you’ll be interacting with throughout the year. If you send a message out, ask them if they got it. At the Holiday Night Rally, Niki got upset because I didn’t get the message over KCC’s absence. Take ideas from other leadership students or from TikTok. I’ve seen many rallies with ideas that we could’ve really done this year and if we take inspiration, the school would love it. Also, come with brand new ideas. It would be interesting to see what you and Laila could come up with. Plan the rallies a month ahead of time. If rallies are planned a week ahead, it would just be dull and not as exciting as advertised.
Senior year will seem easy once you start the school year but, there is a lot of stress that awaits you with SAT’s, College Applications, and most importantly, planning the rallies. This will be the most important part of your everyday life next school year. Being the woman on the microphone showing everyone who’s boss. I cannot wait to see what you and Laila do next year even though I won’t be here. Congratulations and Good Luck!

Do's and don't's
DO: Make sure you communicate properly with your partner and those who are involved in the rally
DO: Plan the rallies at least a month ahead of time
DO: Write the script two weeks ahead of time
DO: Make sure the school is quiet before you start the agenda
DO: Bring new innovative ideas to the table everytime you plan a rally
DO: Get the whole school involved in festivities
DO: If there’s a contest, make sure there’s some sort of voting
DO: Make sure everything is correct the day of the rally
DON’T: Freestyle the script
DON’T: Just choose leadership kids for games for rallies/fashion shows
DON’T: Just make the rallies relate to just one social group
DON’T: Freak out if you mess up, no one would notice it unless you act up
DON’T: Show bias towards classes in class cheers
DON’T: Wait last minute to change the script unless Morty says so
DON’T: Wait until last minute to start planning

The professional
In Leadership, we have discussed giving gratitude to those in our community, school, and our peers in the program. We have done this with Dude Be Nice, Valentine Hearts, Letters, Love Ripon, and the End of the Year Dance. During Dude Be Nice, we would nominate someone who has done a lot for this school and show them some love. It’s always a great week to get everyone together and see the reaction of the school every year. Showing gratitude gives you a very nice feeling and it gives the person the love that they deserve.
Also, we have learned about how to become a professional in the real world. We do this by creating cover letters, resumes, and doing the mock interviews. Unfortunately, we were not able to do the mock interviews this year but we were able to create cover letters and resumes. I already had a resume that I have been using since last year so I just went back and updated it so it’s more relevant to what I am currently doing and I made a new cover letter specifically for this employer. This is an enjoyable lesson and it shows you what the real world is like.
Learning about professional skills in Leadership helps us learn what we will do in the future and improve on what we need to do. Managing time, Showing gratitude, Having a strong work ethic, and just being an all-around good leader is what this program is all about. In the real world, there will be many challenges to face. It’s my senior year and I’m about to enter the real world but good thing I have the skills I learned the past two years to help me in the dark.

Change
At the Holiday Night Rally, there was a problem with the communication with another club and there were other elements of the rally that were missing and I had no clue what happened to them. There was supposed to be an opening to the rally not just a “welcome to our second annual rally” type opening. We were going to open up lip syncing christmas songs but we were not able to do that. We just had to say welcome to the rally and go over the agenda of the rally.
One of the biggest problems was when the Korean Culture Club didn’t show up to perform. They texted me about them not being able to perform but it didn’t get to me. I was thinking to myself “I swear if they did not show up I’m going to freak out”. I was angry for almost the entirety of the rally because of it. We also didn’t have marshmallows on deck for the contest so I had to run and grab some from the table. At the moment, I wanted to shut down the rally and tell everyone to go home. Everything after that was fine. The Smash Bros match, Trivia game, Sweater contest, and Tree lighting was great and we had no problems doing those. It was a success with the student body but I was upset about not knowing much ahead of time.
In the future, we need to make sure that we have all of the resources we need on deck and make sure we are not short or don’t have anything at all. We also need to make sure we communicate clearly and make sure we got the message about the absence of a performer. We need to be better prepared as I feel as if we were good but we needed a little more preparation. It was a success, but we need to work on a lot of things for next year’s rally.

the ideal leader
The Ideal Leader is somebody who is committed to their work and works hard everyday to meet or exceed those expectations. They must be kind to one another even if they can’t stand them that way others don’t follow the path they are on. The Ideal Leader should always meet deadlines on time and not procrastinate that way they will mess up. Ideal Leaders shouldn’t make up things for their own gain. They shouldn’t go around saying something about a leader that is not true so people would go up against them. The Ideal Leader should be positive in the workplace, even in the worst of times. It’s best to be positive that way people would want to follow.
The Ideal Leader shouldn’t be caught up in drama that way they come into the classroom with a good attitude. They shouldn’t be failing in their classes because if they are failing, they are not leaders. Leaders are not failures. The Ideal Leader should go out of their way everyday to make sure the student body is happy. If they are not happy, they didn’t do their job. The Ideal Leader shouldn’t do what everybody else is doing because that would make them a follower. Most importantly, the Ideal Leader should always strive for success. If the Ideal Leader is not successful, they are not an Ideal Leader.
